Hope and fear are the strongest emotions attached to decision making. If you’re like me, you’ve probably let hope lead you into some pretty embarrassing and regretful decisions. I’ve been scammed on the internet dozens of times and have learned some pretty important lessons that have saved me from getting ripped off of my money and, most importantly, my time. Here are four tips I’ve picked up along the way:
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
I know it’s an old cliche; but with internet business opportunities the saying rings truer than ever. If it were really easy to make thousands of dollars in a few hours doing data entry or filling out surveys online do you really think people would still be cleaning toilets 40 hours a week for $8 dollars an hour? Is it possible to make thousands a day online, of course it is, but like everything it requires some work and new skills, especially in the beginning.
Make sure you understand where the money is made (Value Added)
There’s really only ONE fundamental way to make money. You have to SELL something. Online you make money by selling products (either yours or other’s) or by advertising (which is really just another form of selling). If it’s difficult to figure out what you will be selling or there is no real value in what you are selling then it’s most likely a scam.
Don’t be lazy!
Store gift cards, mail-in rebates, and money back guarantees are all ways cooked up by corporations to profit from the laziness of customers. Most online information products come with at least a 30 day money back guarantee so WRITE DOWN the day you buy a product and test it out right away. It’s usually very easy to get your money back on Clickbank products and other merchants. All you do is send them an email with your order number so Oh Yeah, keep your confirmation emails saved in an archive folder also.
Don’t get too attached to your mistakes
Most of us have been raised to finish our vegetables even if we don’t like the taste, but one must not get too attached to scammy products. If the e-book you bought doesn’t deliver on its promises then just STOP READING and GET YOUR MONEY BACK. Money comes and goes, but time wasted is lost forever. If you’ve been scammed you’ve been scammed and sticking with a failed plan isn’t going to make it a success. There are thousands of opportunities online and there are techniques that are perfect for you. So get your money back and MOVE ON.

While there are many genuine and legitimate opportunities offering to set people up in their own home based internet business on the internet, it can be difficult to separate them from the ones that only want to take your money. That’s why it is important for you to be aware of some clues hidden within the offers which can mean the difference between finding a legitimate business to operate and ending up helping someone else make money while you lose your shirt.
Typically, there are four danger signs that need to be thoroughly checked out before you sign up to a business opportunity on the Internet. Understand that not all of the companies that make these claims are fraudulent, but these are four things that many scams have in common:
Firstly, you will be expected to pay a large entry fee before you can operate the business. Secondly, you will be told that you can get rich without any effort on your part. Thirdly, there will be no clear information about what you will be selling. Finally, there will be no clearly available contact information such as a genuine street address and telephone number.
Not every business that requests a set up or entrance fee is fraudulent but what you have to consider is the amount being demanded before you can qualify to start selling their product or service.
It should also be easy to understand what you will get in return for your investment in terms of products, services and training. Many a fraudulent company will list training as one of the perks, but often the training consists of nothing more than links to other sites where you are expected to learn about the company’s business model.
If the training focuses entirely on how to recruit others into the business in return for a commission instead of selling real products, the company’s operation may very well be a scam or certainly of questionable legality.
Ask anybody who has ever been involved in building a real business and you will be told that it takes effort. You have to work your business if you want it to succeed. That is no different for businesses that operate entirely on the Internet. But one of the most common pitches Internet scams make is the promise of easy money for little effort, no more than an hour or two a day or even a week. Sadly, however, there really is no such thing as a free lunch and anybody who tries to convince you otherwise is not being totally honest. Claims about how much some people have earned are usually accompanied by a disclaimer stating that the quoted figures are not necessarily typical of the potential earnings, which should beg the question about why the figure was quoted in the first place.
Many scam artists keep you in the dark about what their business offer is about until after you have spent your money and discover there is no way you can sell the business to others with a clear conscious. So, if you have been reading a business opportunity website for several minutes and still have no idea about what the product or service is, it could be that the offer is a scam. You should at least know what the product is, and how much it will cost, before you get any further involved with the business.
Check out the contact information. If the only way of contacting the company is via an email address that might be because they don’t intend to be around long enough to deal with your questions or complaints. Money back guarantees are worthless if there is no place you can go to claim your money back. Neither post office boxes nor email addresses can be relied upon if there is no other contact information available.
Finally, there are a couple of quick and easy things you can do to check out a company’s reputation. First, simply type the name of the company and the word “scam” into Google and check the results. Another place you can check out a company is on a business opportunities forum. Sign up to a forum and then start a thread asking about the company that concerns you. Remember, though, that just because a disgruntled person calls something a scam does not necessarily mean that it is. However, if there are a lot of complaints, and if the company charges a large entry fee, makes outlandish promises, offers no clear product information and posts no genuine contact information, then the chances that you have found a fraudulent operation are quite high. Don’t sign up to their offer and certainly don’t give them any of your money.

Though there are companies offering wholesale vacation packages that are legitimate, there are also several companies on the Internet that are posing as coastal vacation dealers and scamming thousands of people out of their hard earned money. These scam artists are well versed in travel package proposals and can sound incredibly convincing. They will offer you an amazing price for a coastal vacation getaway and will often tell you that all you have to do is send X amount of money to an address and that they (the salesperson) will take care of the rest for you. As you write your check and mail it off the scam artist collects these checks and then disappears. You are out X amount of money and a vacation dream. Other scam artists prey on victims to steal their money and identity. By doing the similar actions as above as well as taking social security numbers and bank account information for personal fraudulent use. These victims have lost money and a sense of trust.
Coastal vacation scams are still ongoing though the federal state task force has begun to take Internet business fraud much more seriously. Law enforcement sweeps targeting this type of fraud have placed 25 individual scam artists in prison for terms up to160 years. There have been 23 fraudulent business convictions and counting. Not only are customers of these services being taken advantage of, but those seeking a work from home opportunity are being subject to these actions as well. Internet companies including false coastal vacation sites are offering job opportunities claiming to make thousands of dollars while you sit at home and collect the earned cash. People are sending in a membership fee to join this false business and being scammed out of thousands of dollars and their dreams of home business operation. For those who have been victims to such scams they have had to learn how to protect their selves from this event the hard way. For those of us who have not been subjected to an Internet scam we should head some important warning signs.
In order to protect yourself from these scams you should always look for a BBB symbol. This is a symbol that states a business is legitimate and is registered with the Better Business Bureau. If this symbol is not present feel free to contact the BBB for an investigation. Prior to sending off any payments or personal information do some research. Take the time to find out where the company originated from and how long they have been in business. Look for references to see how previous customers or clients have found these services. There is nothing wrong with probing a company for information to protect yourself. Never give out personal information prior to knowing a company’s true background. If a company or its representative cannot provide this information you should contact authorities for an investigation. If a company has nothing to hide they will gladly answer any questions that you have. Protecting yourself from fraud and scams such as the coastal vacation scams is your duty to yourself as well as those around you.

While the internet has numerous opportunities to choose from, you also must be cautious of the wide array of home business scams. As sad as it is to say, there are just as many scams on the internet as there are legitimate opportunities. But with the proper precautions, you can stay clear and enjoy a rich life on the internet.

Second, it is virtually impossible to have instant success on the internet. It certainly speeds up the process if you join an existing program over starting your own from scratch. But it still takes a good amount of time to learn the program, become an expert on the program, and learn who and where to look for customers. Do not be fooled into thinking you can make money overnight.
Lastly, far too many internet scams go on and on about how much money you will make without mentioning how you will make money. All they want you to do is join and hope that you ask questions after they have your money. Do not join anything until you know exactly what the program is all about.
The way you do this is by asking around the internet and contacting the person in charge of the program. A legitimate home business program is more than willing to answer any questions you may have. Because of this, look for contact information on the sales page and home page if you join the program. You want to know you can get in touch with someone in charge of the business. If your call or e-mail goes unanswered or the contact information is false, then you know to stay away from the opportunity.
Just like everything in life, you have to be cautious about what you join and what you invest in. There are far too many home business scams out there waiting to pounce on someone who does not know better and the Internet does make it easier. But as long as you are careful and get the questions you have answered, there should be no problem.
